Treasure Chest Cake!!!

My little daughter turned 7 last week, and this year she requested a pirate party. I don't know why...such an odd theme for her to choose, but who am I to judge?! I'm just really glad she didn't ask for a pirate ship cake!! This one was fairly easy to make, except that I didn't think through the lid support very well. When I first placed it on, I didn't have the dowels in the right spot, and since the weight of the lid was all in the back, it smooooshed a little. Sometimes I have to laugh...I let my kids choose whatever cake they want, regardless of difficulty just so I can figure these little things out. The cakes always turn out pretty good, but they are definitely guinea pigs!

Wow, that's beautiful! You're way too ambitious. =) It would be interesting to know how you did the wood texture and the leather binding, but don't bother if you're busy! I'm not a decorator (well, simple things, maybe)...just curious.

If I were a little girl, I'd be even more entranced. =D

It's actually very very easy to do the wood grain! I had colored the fondant a yellowy-brown, and then once on the cake I just took a knife and made lines and marks. Then I watered down brown gel food color and painted it on the fondant. Voila! Wood grain! The "leather" I just used dark brown fondant and once cut into strips. I did also use a texture mat on them, and painted them with very thin brown luster dust.
